Our Philosophy of Education

Bluegrass Homeschoolers uses a multi-age, holistic approach to education.  Every child has a natural ability to learn and it is our responsibility to nurture that curiosity and foster a love for learning.  Through interactive play and hands-on learning opportunities, every child will flourish in his or her own way.  We believe it is important to balance structured instructional time with unstructured time to play, learn, create, and grow together as a community.  We don't believe in using just one approach to education as every child learns in a different way.  We create safe, creative learning environments that combine multiple learning styles into one multi-leveled classroom.

Father and Son Playing

All students progress through the curriculum based on mastery of the material, not by grade or age level. Direct instruction in math and language arts is given in a small group or individual basis by professional teachers at that student’s instructional level. Social studies, science, and electives are taught in a multi-age format with individualized assignments given at the student’s academic level.

Our program and curriculum are not based on one specific educational method. The Good and the Beautiful curriculum creators “intensely studied many different philosophies over a period of years and compiled what they felt were the best elements from several different philosophies, pulling mainly from Charlotte Mason.” At Bluegrass Homeschoolers, we believe strongly in the value of a flexible, rigorous, and comprehensive education emphasizing the highest of moral values, the innate need for children to play and be in nature, and the family’s central role in learning.
